Matthew Bailey To Study Science At UNC

Shortly after Matthew Bailey graduated from BrevardHigh School this year, his research was the subject of an article entitled "Finding a Natural Source of Medicine in Waterfall Plants." The article appeared in the blog of the Society for Science and the Public on July 24, 2018. He and his two project mates, rising seniors Nicole Rideout and John Nguyen, hiked down to Lower Bearwallow Falls in Gorges State Park to collect spray cliff plants as part of their research for their T.I.M.E. 4 Real Science course. They brought the plants back to the lab at Brevard High to study the endophytes in the plants; they wanted to investigate novel sources of medicine produced by endophytic compounds. Bailey

Scholarship Has Vital Impact For Local Student

Ashari Arkansas loves snow. She grew up in Brevard, but she loves snow. That is just one of the facts about this 2017 recipient of a Connestee Falls scholarship. Ashari is half Native American on her mother's side, but she was raised here in Brevardby her grandparents on her father's side who, being from an older generation, taught her to be kinder and wiser. Although she has relatives in Cherokee, Ashari said that Brevard has always been her home. In high school, Ashari participated in track and field and shot put. She also found time to participate in a high school nursing program. After the death of her grandfather, Ashari's world crumbled. "I started to go down a wrong path," she said. "

Spradlins Receive Connestee Falls Scholarships

Sometimes seeing double is a good thing. Friends and teachers of Aidan and Bryce Spradlin might feel that way. These two young scholars and athletes are identical twins. Now, in addition to accumulating academic and athletic awards, they are also 2018 recipients of Connestee Falls scholarships. Aidan and Bryce were born in Athens, Ga. Their parents are both educators, and they have an older brother, Caleb.
