This year's Connestee Falls Student Scholarship Program "Celebration of Education Gala" on Friday night, Sept. 21, lived up to its theme, "A Night to Shine." The highlight of the evening came at the end of the program: the announcement of a major donation which will begin the funding of a Scholarship Program endowment. Connestee resident Sue Green spoke on behalf of herself and her spouse, Robin Phillips, explaining that Phillips' father, Paul Phillips, who passed away recently, had left a trust from which Robin and Sue were to donate funds to support educational endeavors. Connestee Falls scholarship winner Aleece Fosnight is a high achiever. A 2003 graduate of Brevard High School, she finished her course work a semester early and started Brevard College as a sophomore in January 2003. She graduated from Brevard College in 2005, cum laude, with a B.A. degree in health science studies and a minor in chemistry, all the while working 25 hours a week at Ingles. After an unsatisfying stint as a teller manager at a bank, she took two classes at Blue Ridge Community College and then enrolled in the University of Kentucky Physician Assistant Program, graduating in 2011 with a Master of Science degree in physician assistant studies. When Bill Medl, the Chair of the Connestee Falls Student Scholarship Program, received three thank you notes bearing the same surname and return address on the envelopes, he thought there must have been some error. Upon reading the notes, however, he realized that instead of having received multiple notes from one person who had mistakenly sent all three to him, he had heard from three people in the same family.
